Chapter One Bar
This Chapter One is one of the better bar options and more enjoyable bars in Kunming. enjoyable This book bar is one of the more bars in town and holds its status with a growing number of loyal customers, where most other bars in Kunming seem to tire quickly. The drinks are cheap, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is comfortable. There is plenty of room upstairs and downstairs to relax, read a book (Chapter One has a growing library of western books), surf the net (free wi-fi access), or mingle with other customers. Chapter One also seems to always have the most abundant supply of Beer Lao (very highly recommended) in Kunming and is now serving a growing menu of Indian food (also recommended). Directions: Chapter One is located on Wenlin Jie, a little bit east up the road and across the street from Teresa’s and Prague Cafe near Yunnan University. Public bus number 1 will get you very close and will save you a few RMB that you will be happy to spend on Beer Lao.

Halfway House
Halfway House is ofen a good option for late-night drinks in Kunming.It is very comfortable. owners are friendly, and the rotation of music is good. There is an open mic every Monday night, starting around 9 pm. During the rest of the week, Halfway House is a nice, mellower alternative to the Speakeasy up the street. Halfway House generally sees its biggest crowds on the weekends. Dali beer is available on tap - only 5 RMB a mug! How to get there: Halfway House is located at the intersection of Dongfeng Xi Lu and Kunshi Lu. Jianshi Lu becomes Dongfeng Xi Lu at the intersection with Wenlin Jie where the cinema and the Dicos are located. Walk south of the cinema 20 meters past the Speakeasy.

Speakeasy Bar
Speakeasy Bar attracts of the bigger crowds in Kunming, especially on weekends. underground bar offers two pool tables, a stage for live music (on occasion), plenty of area to sit, a dance floor that gets busy on Friday and Saturday, and rotating DJs that spin different kinds of music throughout the week. Cocktails are cheap but could stand to be a bit stronger. Also, beware of the smell on the way in. Overall, good times can be had at the Speakeasy, especially if lots of alcohol is in the mix. How to get there: The Speakeasy is located on Dongfeng Xi Lu under an internet cafe, down the road south of where Jianshi Lu and Wenlin Jie intersect. Jianshi Lu becomes Dongfeng Xi Lu at that point.
